A Guide to Making a House Move as Stress-Free as Possible

Home Decor

9 Apr

Moving house is an experience full of excitement. It’s a fresh start that provides new opportunities, a blank canvas to turn a property into your ideal home.

On the other hand, it is also an overwhelming and stressful event. This is down to the various different elements required to turn a move into a successful reality. There’s the packing, arranging all your mail to arrive at the new address, organizing utilities, transport…

The list goes on and on.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take which will keep your sanity and blood pressure down. Here’s a simple guide to making a house move as stress-free as possible:

Select a moving company

It might seem a little hasty to start the whole process by picking a moving company, but it makes sense for one big reason: availability. You want to ensure your firm of choice is available on the day of the move, otherwise you could be caught out and need to scramble to find an alternative option.

To find local movers for the job, it’s essential you do your research. Look for professionals that have received glowing feedback from past customers. After all, you don’t want to put your possessions at risk with an inexperienced moving firm that cuts corners.

Start packing early

Another aspect to start early with the packing. You might believe this can be done fairly quickly, but never underestimate the work required. Ideally, this process should be done over a period of a few weeks.

Obviously, you won’t be packing away anything you still need before the move. Yet you can start with the rooms and items that are used the least. Think about the likes of kitchen appliances, sports equipment, video game collections, office supplies, and so on.

Get rid of unnecessary possessions

When packing up your possessions, this presents an ideal opportunity to get rid of any clutter. You want to avoid filling your new home with unnecessary items – remember, this is meant to be a fresh start. Plus the fewer items you pack for the move, the cheaper it will ultimately be.

Before throwing anything in the bin, see if it’s suitable for donating or recycling.

Remain organized

It’s important that, when you’re packing away all your items, you keep everything organized well. This will prove to be a big help when you unpack at the new home.

As a starting point, ensure each packed box is accurately labeled. They shouldn’t only be summarized as, say, ‘kitchen’. Make a few bullet points to describe the items within the box. This means you avoid having to root around all the boxes to find something specific.

Have a survival kit for moving day

With all the different elements involved, moving day is exhausting for both the body and mind. Due to this, it’s nice to have a planned survival kit for the move. This kit will contain all the essentials – such as snacks, drinks, phone chargers, and toiletries – needed for getting through the day.

Then once this busy and draining day is out of the way, you can get down to unpacking and settling into your new home.
