Tips for Making the Transition into a Senior Management Position in Healthcare

Business & Entrepreneurship

27 Sep

If you’ve already been working in the healthcare industry for a couple of years and you’re starting to think about the higher-paying, more prestigious positions that are available in this sector, you might be wondering what steps you can take to improve your chances of being hired for those jobs. There are numerous ways to make yourself a more appealing candidate, especially if you already have experience as a long-time employee of a medical facility. However, certain efforts will certainly have a stronger impact than others when it comes to improving your chances of landing your dream job. With that said, here are a few tips you can leverage as you strive towards transitioning into a senior management position in healthcare.

1. Earn Another Healthcare Degree

Adding a degree to your resume is by far the most effective step you can take to increase your chances of landing a senior management role. You need to understand that an advanced degree is a common prerequisite that is required from the vast majority of senior managers and administrators in hospitals, clinics, and other medical establishments. Thus, without the appropriate educational credentials, you simply won’t be qualified for the position you’re after. You can find local universities and online programs that provide applicable degrees by searching for “healthcare degrees” followed by your state or city name (i.e. – healthcare degrees in New Hampshire).

2. Put Together a Persuasive Portfolio

If you really want to ensure that your application will be taken seriously by the hiring manager who reviews it, it’s best to send an accompanying portfolio that showcases your skills and experience. This could include advanced documents or spreadsheets you’ve created, work achievements or awards you’ve obtained, and changes or improvements you’ve been involved in implementing at your previous place of employment. Ultimately, any item that will add weight to your application should be added to the list of components you’ll compile to create a comprehensive CV and portfolio.

3. Start Gaining Relevant Experience

Once you’ve set out on the path to earning another degree and have worked on your CV and portfolio extensively, it’s time to address the final perk that you might be missing – experience. You might feel as though your years of working as a nurse are good enough, but if you don’t have any background as a clerical or administrative worker, your nursing experience alone won’t help much. Thus, you may need to consider the possibility of transitioning to mid-level administrative jobs before you can be considered eligible for senior management positions.

Everybody Has to Start Somewhere

If you’ve been feeling discouraged or unconfident about your ability to be hired as a senior manager, just remember that even the head honcho at every company got their start somewhere. Furthermore, to reach such a top-ranking position, you may have to apply and get turned down many times until you finally find the golden opportunity. Stay persistent and exercise the tips given above and you should have no problem reaching your intended destination in due course.
