How to Create a Comfortable Work Environment

Business & Entrepreneurship

23 May

Happy workers are better workers. This has been proven time and time again. So, the question is: how do you make your employees happy? This answer will vary, depending on your industry. However, there are some reasonable accommodations that apply to most situations. Here are few ways to make your employees more comfortable.

Hiring the Right Personalities
Skill, education, and experience are all very important when trying to fill a position. However, a candidate’s attitude and personality should also be included in the decision-making process. There are many different types of character traits and all of them may not mesh well with your current employees. For example, some people are aggressive and goal-oriented when it comes to their career. If your company is more laid-back and easy-going, this type of personality may not be a good fit. Hiring the wrong personalities can lead to unwanted friction, which usually results in decreased production. There is no place for drama in the workplace.

Smart Work Areas
No matter where you work, eight hours or more can be tough on the body. Doing repetitive movements on a regular basis can put a significant strain on the joints and muscles. Fortunately, there are aids available to create a more comfortable workstation. For example, if you have employees that spend most of their shift on their feet, they should have cushioned floor mats at their area. Adequate lighting and ergonomic chairs are great ways to help those who work in front a screen all day. Some factories and plants operate in extreme temperatures in order to make quality products. If your employees work in hot conditions, they would absolutely appreciate a nice fan.

Respect the “Breaks”
Every company has certain expectations of their employees. Whether it’s producing a certain number of parts or adhering to a time-limit, they are paid to do their part. This is how the company is able to thrive. So, it is only fair to respect their commitment to the job. Employees deserve a decent “break room.” You can start by providing good food and enough seating for each shift. When your workers have an opportunity to rest, they would like to enjoy it. This doesn’t mean buying a bunch of recliners and flat screen TVs, but employees need more than soda and chips to make it through their shift.

Energizing Food and Drink

There is no doubt working long hours can lead to exhaustion. By providing your employees with healthy snacks and caffeinated drinks they are more likely to be productive. Heavy greasy foods will just increase fatigue and disrupt efficiency. It is always a good idea to be hydrated during long work hours. Little snacks and drinks will go along way to boost not only energy but an overall feeling of happiness.

Creating a more comfortable work environment doesn’t require much time or effort. Start by observing your employees on a typical work day. It may also be helpful to put yourself in their shoes for a bit. You may be surprised by how little it takes to make your employees happier and more productive.
