Natural Pain Relievers for Your Dog

Blog

25 Mar

A variety of issues and ailments can cause pain in your dog. No one likes to see their dog in pain, and it’s almost made worse by the fact that they can’t tell you what’s wrong. Because of that, putting them on a bunch of prescribed medications could do more harm than good.

Often pain killers can have a list of harmful side effects that you’d rather not subject your dog to. Many natural options will help relieve your dogs’ pain without risking side effects, keeping them happy, and reducing stress.

1. CBD

CBD is a cannabidiol which is derived from the hemp plant. It has no psychoactive properties (that’s THC) and therefore is completely safe for pets and humans alike. CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory, so it’s excellent for dogs experiencing joint or muscle pain, such as for arthritis.

It also stops the body’s absorption of anandamide, which can weaken pain signals to the brain. CeeBeeDoo offers delicious CBD dog treats that they should love, so there’s no need to struggle with pills.

2. Comfrey

Comfrey is an herb that’s been used traditionally for pain relief related to joint problems. It should not be ingested and is better applied topically. You can apply it as a poultice, by steeping the herb with warm water. Since it reduces inflammation, it’s useful when applied to scrapes, open wounds, broken bones, torn ligaments, and seized up joints. It can also be applied in a thicker, salve form.

3. Feverfew

Feverfew is a flowering plant that is often used by humans for treating migraines and arthritis. These same properties work wonders on pets. You can get feverfew in many forms including tincture, capsule, powder and infusion from a pet store or online. Not only can it help with headaches and other sources of pain, but it is packed with beneficial vitamins and minerals. It can also decrease blood pressure and has muscle relaxing properties.

4. Yucca

Yucca is another anti-inflammatory which can help reduce joint and muscle pain in your dog. It’s incredibly nutrient-dense, providing your dog with iron, magnesium, calcium, vitamin C, niacin, protein, and more. Not only is it effective for pain, but it also increases appetite. Dogs often don’t eat when they are in pain, so the combination of these two properties is beneficial. You can purchase it in powder form and add it to your dog’s food.

5. Massage

Though not a herbal remedy, massage is an entirely natural way to reduce pain in your dog. Getting a massage can help relieve aches and pain and relax muscles, and the same goes for your dog. You can help increase circulation to various parts of their body to stimulate healing and reduce tension.

Since they can’t tell you exactly what they feel, it’s best to go on the gentle side. Start by applying light pressure with a flat palm. Then use light, circular motions and be aware of any areas where they react. If they whimper or flinch, then back off a bit and instead massage around the area, instead of directly on a sensitive spot.
